This is the web site of Richard Muller. I am a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California at Berkeley, and Faculty Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, where I have done most of my research...
My former website (no longer updated) is www.muller.lbl.gov And try not to confuse me with Richard S. Muller. |
News: my new book, Now—The Physics of Time

You are reading the word now right now. I can state this with full confidence, even though I have no pre-knowledge of when you happened across this page.
But what does that mean? What makes the ephemeral moment now so special? Its enigmatic character has bedeviled philosophers, priests, and physicists from Augustine to Einstein and beyond. Einstein showed that the flow of time is affected by both velocity and gravity, yet he despaired at his failure to explain the meaning of now. Equally puzzling: why does time flow? Give me a coordinate system and I can stand still in space, but not in time. Is it only a fourth dimension of space? Some physicists have given up trying to understand, and call the flow of time an illusion. But physics should account for experience, not deny it. In this new book I explain a new theory for the flow of time, and describe experimental tests that can verify, or falsify, the theory. It is written to be understood by the layman, and to be appreciated by the expert.
